Yeah, I know this was supposed to be a musical post, and it’s all done and ready to upload and everything, but something weird’s happened today! And I mean really, genuinely bizarre! Let me explain…

For the past few days, my site hits here have hit an all time low 😦 I’m not quite sure whether I’ve done something wrong, or the wordpress hosting’s being a bit dodgy (like it’s started not telling me when people comment on my posts) or I’m just not as good as I used to be (did I used to be good?)

Anyhoo, late this morning I was forlornly checking my site stats on my phone only to discover that I’d shot up to 27 views for the day. One extreme to the other. Further investigation lead me to discover that all my views had come from Hungary… What? Had an extremely bored Hungarian stumbled upon my blog and decided to read lots of posts? I wasn’t sure, but I wasn’t complaining. I thought I’d check again in the afternoon, and my views had gone past 40, almost all from Hungary, but now the ‘visitor counter’ stat had updated, and it seemed that it wasn’t just one person looking at my site, but nearly 40 of them!? It got to early evening and I had to see if the trend was continuing… More than 65 hits, still predominantly Hungarian in origin. I decided it was time to get to the bottom of this…

First of all I found that the vast majority of the site views were on a post I did a few weeks ago called Keeping It Green Part 2 about a day out when some friends and I had taken LSD and wandered round a forest, and I included a few photos taken on the trip. (Click me if you want to read it now.) I wasn’t entirely sure what the particular interest in that topic could be from so many Hungarians, so I investigated further.

Another feature of the wordpress statistics page is that it can tell me how a viewer has come to be on the site, whether via wordpress itself, through twitter or by some other means. Today, almost all my hits were originating via a link from another site, so it was simply a case of following the link back and hopefully discovering what had generated such interest. Sometimes truth can be stranger than fiction…

It appears that someone, presumably Hungarian, had stolen* one of the photos I added to the Keeping It Green post, superimposed a UFO onto it and submitted the image to a Hungarian UFO spotting website claiming it as their own, and genuine. Here’s my original image, with the original caption…

This could be anywhere...

This could be anywhere…

And this is the doctored version…

This could be Pakozd apparently... Spot the difference?

This could be Pakozd apparently… Spot the difference?

The people involved with the website saw through this hoax pretty quickly, not only by analysing the photo, but also by tracing the original back to me and effectively saying “Look everyone, these tricksters stole the photo from here!” and providing a link. They posted the story this morning, and since then I’ve had a succession of UFO enthusiasts clicking on my site just to see where the fraudulent image came from.

Here’s a link to the original article ‘Intentional Fraud UFO Next To Pakozd’  from the website Ittvannak.hu. Google translate succeeds in making it vaguely readable and vaguely comical, and I hope people reading this post will click on the link simply because I feel I owe them some traffic since they sent so much my way!

I’ve just checked again, and I’m now up to 87 site views for the day. I’m not fussy where they come from, beggars can’t be choosers and all that, and finding out the truth about my sudden popularity has lead me on a very curious path. I used to blame aliens when my site hits were really low, but on this occasion, they’ve helped me turned it around. Hooray for aliens, and hooray for Hungarian UFO hoaxers…

You know what’s coming next, and it’s coming sooooooon**

Until then, live long and prosper 😉 … ses X

*I say stolen, but I don’t really care. Any image that I put up on the internet is freely available to anyone for whatever purpose they want (though nothing imappropriate please!) Most of the pictures I use on here I just swipe off google images anyway, so it’s only fair that it works both ways.

** Probably tomorrow, but don’t hold me to it.
